About Us
A trust built on values, vision, and care.
El Pastillo Conservation Trust Inc. was founded with the belief that protecting nature is both a privilege and a responsibility. Why We Exist
Guardians of biodiversity and heritage
The El Pastillo region is home to diverse species of flora and fauna that play a vital role in Puerto Rico’s ecosystem. However, urbanization, pollution, and climate change continue to threaten this delicate balance. Our organization was born out of the urgent need to respond, protect, and educate. By safeguarding natural resources, we also protect cultural identity and future opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

Our Work
Reviving ecosystems, one project at a time.
Sustainable Practices
Balancing human needs with nature’s limits
At El Pastillo Conservation Trust Inc., we recognize that conservation cannot exist in isolation from the people who live alongside these ecosystems. That is why we integrate sustainable practices into everything we do. From promoting eco-friendly farming methods that reduce soil degradation to supporting local fishermen in adopting responsible practices that safeguard marine biodiversity, our projects are designed to strike a balance between human needs and environmental health. We also work with small businesses to introduce eco-tourism models that benefit local economies without harming fragile ecosystems. By creating opportunities for communities to thrive while protecting natural resources, we ensure that sustainability is not just a concept but a way of life.

Research and Advocacy
Science guiding policy, policy guiding action
Research is at the heart of informed conservation. Our team, alongside local universities and environmental experts, conducts field studies to monitor species populations, assess habitat health, and track the impacts of climate change. These findings help us craft effective conservation strategies that respond to real-world challenges. Beyond data collection, we engage with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure scientific evidence directly informs laws, regulations, and community practices. From protecting endangered nesting areas to influencing zoning laws that prevent harmful development, our advocacy efforts are rooted in solid research. This combination of science and policy enables us to create long-lasting, systemic change that benefits both nature and society.
Youth Engagement and Education
Inspiring the next generation of stewards.
We firmly believe that the future of conservation depends on empowering young people. Through interactive workshops, outdoor learning programs, and partnerships with schools, we provide opportunities for youth to connect with the natural world. These experiences not only spark curiosity but also cultivate a sense of responsibility. Whether it’s a hands-on activity like tree planting or a classroom discussion about sustainable living, we equip young learners with the knowledge and tools to become lifelong guardians of the environment. By investing in youth education, we plant seeds of awareness and action that will grow into lasting change.

Our Volunteer
Be Part of the Movement
Learn and Grow
Gain knowledge while giving back
Our volunteer opportunities are designed to be as enriching for you as they are for the environment. Every task—whether in the field, in classrooms, or behind the scenes—offers a chance to expand your knowledge of conservation, sustainability, and community stewardship. You’ll gain hands-on experience in environmental science, project management, and teamwork while contributing to meaningful projects. For students, it’s a chance to complement their studies with real-world application; for professionals, it’s an opportunity to learn new skills and broaden their perspectives. Every moment spent volunteering is a step toward personal growth and ecological understanding.
Create Lasting Memories
Make friends, make change.
Volunteering is also about connection—meeting like-minded individuals, building friendships, and sharing experiences that leave a lasting impression. From collaborating on group projects to celebrating small victories together, the bonds you form while volunteering can be as impactful as the work itself. Many of our volunteers tell us that their time with the trust has given them not only valuable skills but also lifelong memories. Whether it’s the joy of watching a newly planted tree take root or the pride of helping children learn about conservation, the memories created are reminders that collective action truly makes a difference.
Advocate for Change
Your voice can amplify our impact
Not all volunteering happens outdoors—sometimes the most powerful contributions come from raising awareness and speaking out. We encourage volunteers to use their voices to advocate for conservation in their own networks, whether by sharing our mission on social media, writing about their experiences, or engaging with local decision-makers. Advocacy helps spread the word and attracts more supporters to our cause. As an advocate, you become a bridge between the trust and the wider community, ensuring that the importance of protecting El Pastillo is heard far beyond our immediate region.

Laura Martínez
Teacher, Isabela PR
“As a teacher, I always look for ways to inspire my students beyond the classroom. Partnering with El Pastillo Conservation Trust Inc. has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Their educational workshops opened my students’ eyes to the importance of protecting our natural environment. Many of them had never thought about how small daily actions could impact ecosystems, but after attending field trips and interactive sessions, I saw a noticeable shift in their attitudes. The trust not only gave them knowledge but also empowered them to take responsibility for their surroundings. For me, seeing that spark of curiosity grow into genuine care was priceless.”

Michael Johnson
Eco-Tourist, USA
“I came to Puerto Rico looking for a vacation, but what I found at El Pastillo was life-changing. Joining a volunteer day with the trust, I expected to simply lend a hand planting trees. What I didn’t expect was the sense of belonging and purpose I felt while working alongside passionate people who care deeply for the land. Learning about sustainable practices and the delicate balance of the coastal ecosystem gave me a new perspective on my role as a global citizen. I returned home with more than just memories—I came back with a renewed sense of responsibility to live sustainably and share what I learned.”

Ana Rivera

“El Pastillo Conservation Trust Inc. has been an incredible partner for our neighborhood. They’ve involved us in beach clean-ups, reforestation projects, and educational sessions that bring families together. What makes them different is that they truly listen to our voices and respect our culture. Instead of imposing solutions, they work with us to create plans that fit our needs and values. Because of their efforts, our community feels more connected—not only to each other but also to the land and sea that sustain us.
